When building properties many standards are now taken into consideration including the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREAAM. Alongside this at LairdKing we use home automation and automation of building management systems to manage your energy to make it more efficient and cost effective for you.

Over the last ten years there have been many studies into how much more efficient running an automated heating and lighting system within environments can be. From September 2002 to December 2005 the Universities of Bremen and Trento took part in on study to monitor their energy. The Universities installed into areas of the building automated heating and lighting control, which both worked on sensors. The system was programmed to feedback light and heat levels and when these fell below a set standard then the lights or heating automatically came on to bring the room up to the set standards. By 2005 the energy used by the automated area was half of the energy used in the areas of the University with standard thermostats only.

Dimming of lighting is also energy efficient with a 25% dim level you will get 20% savings (Lutron Electronics Co). Automated lighting systems can be programmed to come on at 25% dimmed all the time so you are constantly saving without thinking!

Fully automated buildings can now control power as well, giving users the opportunity to ‘shut down’ areas of the building. For example in the home a user can shut down the power to the Sky Boxes and amplifiers when they are not in use, which over a year saves a lot of energy and therefore money than leaving them on or on standby.
